Q: What can I do to make my child realise the importance of healthy teeth and gums?
A: The best way to instil a positive long-term approach towards the health of teeth and gums in a child is to create a habit of teeth brushing from an early age. For young children, it is ideal to develop a routine of regular brushing at times of the day that are consistent. You could even brush your teeth together with your child until your are confident that they are brushing their teeth to the correct standard and can be trusted to continue to do so on their own.
Q: What dietary advice can you give me that can help me protect my child’s teeth as they grow?
A: As you know, many children like the taste of sugary products – sweets, fizzy drinks, and fruit juices being just three examples. The best way to limit the damage that these products can do to your child’s teeth is to limit their intake of such foods and drinks as much as possible.
Q: Is it advisable to give my child food and drinks which have no added sugar when and where possible?
A: Items with no added sugar are most certainly preferable to products with a high content of sugar. If possible, it is even better to go one step further and provide a sugar-free option whenever you are able to.
